Assessments
All children will be allocated a key worker when they join us at preschool. Your child’s keyworker will use the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) areas of learning to observe and make assessments and use these to plan activities and experiences to support their learning and development.
During their time at preschool all children will have short written summary assessments of their learning and development which will be shared with parents/carers.
Children with SEND will have a tailored approach to their learning and development and our curriculum and assessment will be adapted to meet their individual needs.
We use the following assessment methods:
Tracking – using the non statutory guidance alongside the EYFS your child’s development milestones will be tracked and recorded within the first term. A tracking assessment is carried out three times during the school year, however practitioners may retrack more often if they feel that their key child has moved on and is ready for the next steps in their learning.
Every Child’s a Talker (ECAT) assessments will be completed for all children and will be used to support any concerns regarding a child’s speech and language development.
Target reviews – these will be completed when practitioners have identified the child has made progress in targeted areas of development and used to set new targets to support further learning. These assessments are placed in the child’s development folder.
Every Child’s a Mover assessments will be used if any practitioner identifies any concerns about a child’s large or fine motor movements.
Progress check 2
All children who attend preschool between the ages of 2 and 3 years must have a Progress Check at 2 years Assessment. This assessment check will be completed during the first term that your child attends.
The assessment provides parents and/or carers with a short written summary of their child’s development in the EYFS prime areas of Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language and Physical Development. Your child’s key worker is responsible for completing the assessment together with input from parents. On completion this summary will be shared with you.
The assessment will be completed with supporting evidence of observations, photographs and relationships with others. Parents are encouraged to provide and share information about their child’s development.
After the assessment is completed, practitioners will use their professional judgement to support your child in their development and address any challenges that may have been identified.
Once the Progress Check is completed, we will securely email a copy to Derby’s Health Visitors team.
